Reducing Waste During a Move
Just because you're moving doesn't mean you have to forget about protecting the environment. Reduce the waste that often happens during a move by following our tips and tricks.
You’re moving on to your next home! The anticipation of moving can be exciting, but when the time comes it can also be a bit overwhelming. One of the toughest things about moving into your new home is the mess that comes along with transferring your belongings. To avoid unnecessary garbage and trash, we’ve compiled a list of tips for reducing waste during a move to make the process as pleasant and eco-friendly as possible!
Finding the Right Moving Company
See if your moving company offers reusable storage crates
Cardboard boxes can be one of the biggest causes of waste in a move. As you look into hiring a moving company, confirm whether or not they offer reusable storage crates. These large crates are perfect for reducing waste as well as safely storing all of your belongings!
Use a fuel-efficient moving company that helps recycle boxes
When choosing a company, research whether or not their trucks and vans are fuel-efficient. Even if you only need one trip to move all of your belongings, protect the environment by finding a fuel-efficient moving company to help reduce the consumption of excess energy.
Some moving companies will also help their customers recycle their moving boxes. This is a great way to get rid of clutter and focus on preparing your new home instead of trying to track down a recycling centre.
Going eco-friendly with packing materials
Use old newspapers or your towels, rags, and t-shirts to wrap breakables
During a move, it is important to safely wrap your breakables to prevent chips and cracks. Instead of purchasing packaging, use old newspapers you already have on hand to wrap dishes. Your towels, rags, linens, and t-shirts also make great packaging. Aside from reducing garbage, an added bonus is that you’re packing up other parts of your household in the process!
Use Your Resources
Chances are, you’re planning on bringing your nightstands, dressers, and suitcases with you to your new home. As they already take up space, why not utilize these large items to pack some of your smaller belongings? Fill your suitcases with clothes, breakable items, or books for easy carrying. You can also remove the drawers from your furniture and use them to eliminate unnecessary boxes and bags.
Economically use moving boxes - stock up months in advance and donate to someone else moving
If you find yourself needing to use moving boxes, begin stockpiling your stash months ahead of time instead of buying them. Whether you use boxes that packages are shipped in, or you have friends who donate their boxes, keep them in the garage and pull them out as you pack up different rooms in your home.
Once you’re finished with your boxes, don’t simply throw them out! Ask around your circle of friends and family to see if they are planning on moving soon. Giving them your moving boxes is the perfect way to continue the recycling process and minimizing the amount of waste that goes into a move.
Simplify your belongings
Get rid of clutter
As you’re packaging things up, you’ll find there are many items you no longer use, wear, or have a need for. Instead of filling the dumpster, give someone else the chance to love your items! In the weeks before your move, hold a yard sale! This is something the whole family can participate in and is also a great way to bring in a bit of extra money.
If you still have items left over after your yard sale, or if you don’t have time to hold a sale, you have another option! Sort out items to donate to your local thrift store or charity as opposed to just throwing them away. Recycling your items allows you to eliminate waste and keep your new house free of clutter!
Dispose of non-recyclable objects properly (paint, chemicals, etc.)
When you are packing up a household, you often run across old or expired paint, cleaning products, or other chemicals. Because many of these items are non-recyclable, you should research how to dispose of these objects properly. Simply throwing them in the trash can cause serious damage to the environment as they wind up spilling and polluting landfills. Find a local facility that specializes in handling these items in an eco-friendly way.
